“Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”
Genesis 6:22
Can you imagine yourself being the only follower of God in all of society? If you are reading through the Bible in 2009, you will read today Genesis 4 through 6. You will begin the account of Noah and the flood, a historical event that many have long mocked as being fictitious.

Many ancient peoples have written accounts of a flood and the results of such have been discovered in different places on the earth. Jesus spoke of the flood in Matthew 24:37-39 as did Peter in I Peter 3:20.

There are a number of subjects worth our attention in the Biblical account. Noah’s patience, faith, righteousness, consistency and his obedience are exemplary. “By faith, Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith” (Hebrews 11:7). His character was in sharp contrast to the character of those of his society. They were wicked, corrupt, and filled with violence (6:5, 11, 12).

It is the grace of God that should capture our minds as we read through this account.

  • God’s grace is seen in preserving the human race intact and uncontaminated by Satan’s attempts at demonic perversion (Genesis 6:1-3).
  • God’s grace is witnessed in the saving of Noah and his family (6:8). They were saved just as any sinner is saved by God’s grace through faith (Hebrews 11:7; Ephesians 2:8-9).
  • God’s grace is witnessed again during the time the ark was being built. Noah preached God’s righteousness to the people for 120 years giving them the opportunity of being spared from God’s wrath (II Peter 2:5).
The ark is a picture of Christ (Genesis 7:1, 7). The Apostle Paul over and over again speaks of believers as being “in Christ.” Christ is our ark of safety from God’s wrath against sin. Praise God today for His provision of safety and like Noah of old, let us be faithful in sharing the message of God’s grace with all who will hear it.
