Articles of Faith

Those of us who attend Heritage Baptist Church believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to die for our sins, that He rose again to give us abundant life now and through eternity, and that through Him we can enjoy a restored relationship with God.
We believe that the purpose of the church is to glorify God and that it is God’s intention to do His will in the world today through the church and its members. The process for achieving this purpose includes: worship, edification, evangelization, serving, fellowship, and living our faith in a wholesome manner.

The Bible

We believe that the Bible, consisting of both the Old and New Testaments, is God’s infallible, inerrant Word, written by men who were uniquely moved by the Holy Spirit, and that it is our sole authority in all matters of faith and practice.* We affirm our belief in the verbal and plenary inspiration of the Scriptures in the original writings.

  • Infallible - without any misleading statement
  •
  • Inerrant - without any error in the original manuscripts
  •
  • Sole authority - only authority
  •
  • Verbal inspiration - every word is what God intended
  •
  • Plenary inspiration - the quality “God-breathed” applies to all the Scripture
The Godhead

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each one perfect in holiness, infinite in wisdom, measureless in power.
  1. We believe in God the Father. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all that come to Him through Jesus Christ.
  2. We believe in Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, the eternal and only begotten Son of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, sinless in His life, making atonement for the sins of the world by the shedding of His blood on the cross. We believe in His bodily resurrection; His ascension; His high priestly intercession for His people; His Lordship;* and His visible, pre-tribulational, and pre-millennial return to the world according to His promise.
    Colossians 1:13-18; Matthew 1:18-25; Hebrews 4:14-16; John 1:1-12; Acts 1:9-11; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 5:8-11; Hebrews 9:12-28
  3. We believe in the Holy Spirit, that He convicts the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. His works in the believer include (but are not limited to) salvation, baptizing into the body of Christ, indwelling, sealing eternally, progressive sanctification,* gifting, filling, teaching, enabling, and glorifying.
    John 16:8-18; Ephesians 1:13-14; I Corinthians 12:12-14
Man

We believe that man was created in the image of God and was originally without sin. Because of the sin of Adam, all men are now sinners both by nature and by choice. Man is unable to remedy his own lost condition.
Genesis 1-3; Romans 3:10-19; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:1-17
Salvation

We believe that salvation is God’s gift to man in the person of Jesus Christ. Sinful man is saved from the eternal penalty of sin only as a result of receiving Jesus Christ, by faith, as the Savior and Lord of his life.
Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:13; John 1:12-14; Ephesians 1:1-14
The Church

We believe that the church is the body of Christ which is made up of every born-again believer since Pentecost and will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. The local church is an organized body of immersed* believers* voluntarily associated together for the worship of God, the fellowship of believers, the proclamation of the gospel of Christ throughout the world, and the observance of the biblical ordinances (believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper)*. The Scriptural officers of the church are described in I Timothy 3 as pastors (elders or overseers) and deacons. The local church is independent and autonomous* and is free from all outside ecclesiastical* or political* interference.
Acts 4:19; Ephesians 4:4-16; Acts 2:41; I Corinthians 11:23-32; I Timothy 3:1-14
Satan

We believe that Satan is a person, a fallen angel, and the author of sin. He is the open and declared enemy of God and man. He will be eternally punished in the Lake of Fire.
Isaiah 14:12-15; Jude 6; I Peter 5:8; II Thessalonians 2:8-11; Revelation 20:1-10
Last Things

We believe in the pre-millennial return of Christ, an event which can occur at any moment. Christ will rapture the church prior to the seven year Tribulation period. At the conclusion of this period, Christ will return to reign on His millennial throne. There will be a resurrection of the dead, both wicked and righteous. The wicked will be confined to a literal hell for all eternity, while the righteous will be with the Lord forever in heaven.
I Thessalonians 4:13-18; I Corinthians 15:42-44; Philippians 3:20-21; Daniel 9:25-27; Revelation 20:1-4; Matthew 25:34-41; Revelation 20:14-15
